January 8 & 9, 2016

Accra FoodHack is a weekend event that will bring together ‘foodies’ and ‘techies’ to explore the intersection of food and technology and how both groups can collaborate to address issues in the African food ecosystem.

The event, the first of its kind in Africa, will provide a forum for interested stakeholders to brainstorm and develop practical solutions to challenges in starting a food or beverage business, the food supply chain system, food packaging and customer experiences with food businesses.

Why You Should Attend

Food Walk

Join your hackathon team to capture the vibrant food scene of a Saturday morning in Accra. The waakye seller, the chibom buyer, the coconut drinker, the kelewele fryer. Share your great pictures and insights with participants for a chance to win great prizes (even before the hackathon starts!)

Meet other foodies

Wondering who is behind the foodie account you stalk so religiously? Want a chance to collaborate with other foodies on an idea you have? Come check the hackathon out!

Solve a problem

What is a hackathon you ask? Simply a marathon problem-solving session! Bring your A-game (and your laptop) and let’s see how we can together solve problems unique to our environment. How do we store food safely in a ‘dumsor’ era? What is the best way to encourage recycling of plastic food packaging? We know you have some thoughts - see you there!

How do we use Ghanaian food to increase local and international  tourism in the country?

Teams will be asked to pitch an idea and develop a prototype to address the challenge question, while considering the role that technology could play. One of the following four focus areas must be covered in team solutions:

  • Nutrition
  • Convenience
  • Sustainability
  • Employment

Judge information and judging criteria will be provided soon
